On New Year's eve we explore Santiago. In the morning we visit the Artesanal los Dominicos - the best of the craft markets. Little stalls sell jewellery, knitwear, ceramics and tourist knic-knacs. Lots of older English tourists in short shorts!
After the market Diego takes us on a tour of the Barrios Altos - the smart suburbs to the East of the city after which we head to the centre for lunch admiring the graffiti along the river banks as we go.
The central fish market packed and many people are here to eat at Donde Augusto, a huge fish restaurant that fills a third of the central market hall. We find a table in a little room upstairs shaped like a railway carriage where we can look down on the fellow diners. Lunch is ceviche, clams or fish soup, all washed down with excellent Sauvignon Blanc.
We celebrate New Year at Nory's. She has laid on a feast and after eating Claudio brings out the hats and the girls let off confetti bombs. Claudio and Lily show us how to dance Latin and Nick and Vicky demonstrate how not to tango.
At midnight it is Diego's 60th birthday and reason for more celebrating. A great evening.
