Gorillas in the mistToday we head off to find the Sabinyinyo group of gorillas - one of the easier walks in. We cross fields, passing clumps of Eucalyptus and a charcoal burner to get to the edge of the forest in about 30 minutes.

Our guides today are Eugene and Francois - one of the chiefs.

Once in the forest we walk for an hour through bamboo, along ridges, past a big crater and on through fields of nettles.

Today is real 'gorillas in the mist' weather as the clouds swirl around the volcanos.

In our group is an 80 year old American (slow!) and two Italian photographers who are VERY keen to get their shots.

big guyWe find the gorillas in thick bamboo. Not good for photos as there is hardly any light. The Sabiyinyo group has the largest silverback in the area - Rohanda. He looks after 8 other gorillas including a 3 day old baby and some naughty juveniles.

We follow the group as it feeds, stopping to eat vines, thistles and bamboo. A mother carries her baby. An impish juvenile (Big Ben?) swings on creepers and another plays with us, punching Francois. Another infant beats its chest. We jostle with the Italians for shots and then decend to the sunshine.
