Aberdeen is a 10 minute bus ride from Wan Chai, through
the tunnel on the South of the island. Amid drab grey tower blocks is a lively
fishing harbour. Larger boats unload their catches while small sampans rush to
and fro carrying merchandise and tourists alike.
There was an uproar this week when the Health Authority closed down a number of
these stalls for pumping sewage rich sea water into the tanks for holding fish.
Cholera and high doses of E Coli were detected but no one has died so far! |

 Old women tout for
business on the promenade offering trips round the harbour in a sampan for
HK$60. There is not a great deal to see in the harbour apart from rusty fishing
ships as most of the house boats have gone. However it is lively enough.

Instead I catch a free ferry to a floating restaurant.
It is hard to believe that the Jumbo restaurant is floating - it is so massive.
Despite pretty average, and expensive food there is a constant stream of
ferries and taxis coming and going the the dining rooms are packed with locals
outnumbering the tourists.

 Inside
gilded dragons and elaborate tapestries adorn the grand staircase.
At lunchtime you can eat from the menu or, as I did, grab bamboo baskets of dim
sum from the ladies with trolleys as they pass.
After a filling lunch I am back on dry land and heading back for Wan Chai to
watch England beat France in the rugby. |
