Grow up tommySummer half term and the Cattells and Poolers are off to the Lake District. Hilary has booked the most brilliant cottage next to the New Dungeon Gill Hotel in Langdale, perfectly placed for walks (and trips to the pub).

The half term week competes with the first round of the world cup so it is a challenge to get the boys out the door, let alone up a mountain.
Girls outside Stickle cottageAfter a considerable break this gives Ross a chance to get his ropes out again - well OK we replaced some of the gear too. A 25 year old harness is a bit of a risk.

Tommy, Louise, Tom and Katie all get a go, as does John. As well as Mickledore buttress (below left) we discover the great short routes on Scout Crags, a short walk from the cottage. Below right Louise is tackling the classic Route 1 on Upper Scout Crag.

John on White GillAfter a great deal of arm twisting (thanks John), John agrees to spend a morning climbing too. This time we slog up the vertical stream to White Gill Crag. This is also very close to the cottage but unfortunately the ascent is straight up.

Once we get there the rain holds off and we climb another classic - Slabs route 1. A couple of years and the kids will be whizzing up the classic VSs and HVSs here such as Slip Knot, Laugh Knot and others.
