Dunes plains and Losberg
Rambo on Big DaddyBig DaddyThe Great Sand Sea of the Namib Desert stretches from Luderitz to the Kuiseb river. Further north, coastal dunes extend to the Angolan border. This desert is created by the cold Benguela current and these conditions have persisted for the past 5 million years.

Inland in the NamibRand reserve (above) the dunes are covered in a thin layer of grass while in the Sand Sea at Sussosvlei you find huge dunes with only traces of vegetation where the sea fogs leave a dew.

OgeeGemsbok in dunesThese great sand dunes are hugely photogenic - our cameras fill with the sweeping curves of the dune ridges. Another classic shot is the lone Gemsbok (Oryx) posing in front of a dune. It is a mystery where these tough creatures find enough to survive on.
Rover in the dunesKunene riverOn our way north to Puros we stop at Terrace Bay and drive deep into the dunes. Here we learn the mystery of the 'Roaring Dunes'. If you want to know what this is you will have to go and find out for yourself!

At the Kunene river the sand stops - almost as though it has no passport to enter Angola.
