Zanzibar Serena

The Serena Zanzibar lived up to its reputation as the best place to stay in town. Two beautiful adjoining rooms with balcony, hammock and view of the pool and sea. A superb place to explore the old town from.

Tortoise on Prison Island

But first a 20 minute boat trip to nearby Prison Island, where a prison was built by the British but never used. Now the home for rare joint tortoises, some up to 30 years old. These were almost wiped out by thieves and neglect in the last 20 years but now are being carefully protected and increasing in numbers.

Zanzibar door

The old town is famous for narrow streets and carved doors. Men crowd into the many mosques while many women still wear the black "buibui". Mopeds and bicycles rush around the streets occasionally crashing into one another. It all feels safe and makes fascinating exploring.

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders on the seafront, and the Sultan's Palace next door make interesting visits. There are plenty of good restaurants, from trendy Blues to excellent Indians (the kids liked the Marajah). Or you can eat fresh kebabs, samosas and chepatis - all you can eat for less than one pound.

Finally we had a great morning's diving with Zanzibar Dive Centre. The coral and fish outside Stonetown were amazing considering the amount of fishing.

We look forward to a return visit in 2 or 3 years time...
