Off the water we drove up the island to get a better feel
for Tobago landscape. Away from the 'lowlands' in the South the scenery was
breathtaking. Steep hills covered in rain forest, villages perched on mountain
ridges, houses built on the most precarious of stilts and fantastic
beaches.
|
At Castara, Englishman's Bay and Bloody Bay we found idyllic
tropical beaches with soft sand, turquoise water and friendly locals.
Most of the fishing boats here are still powered by oars. We often saw the
fishermen emptying or loading their nets. With such low technology it is no
wonder that the reef life is so abundant. |
A trip to Speyside in the north east
provided beautiful scenery and the oportunity to explore Little Tobago, a
renowned bird sanctuary, between dives. Here Vicky and Anastasia make their way
up the beach.

Louise is more adventurous and accompanies me, barefoot, on an
explore around the island. We see and hear loads of exotic birds but are rather
surprised to come upon a mother hen and her chicks right in the middle of the
path.
After diving we head off to the very popular Gemma's Tree House restaurant,
perched on stilts by the shore in Speyside. Huge helpings of fish, shrimps and
lobster, not to mention a delicious breadfruit pie, quickly fill up the hungry
divers. |
The next day we are back at Englishman's bay where Eula's
cafe serves up a delicious fish roti at a bargain price. Lunch for 4 comes to
TT$105 - about £11.
