For our 2006 holiday we choose to go to the Far East with a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Starting in Hanoi we make the compulsory visit to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum as well as visits to the Temple of Literature and the Fine Arts Museum.
You take your life in your hands as you cross the streets in Hanoi. Hundreds of motorbikes make a continuous stream of traffic which you have to dodge though. The markets are fantastic - each street selling its own specialty - from shoes to tin boxes or funeral goods.
As well as getting the entire family on the bike we have seen coat stands, baths and even a double mattress being carried!
The Water Puppet theatre is a real tourist attraction but we are impressed both by the music, in particular a one string harp with 'whammy bar' and with the scenes of folk tales and village life.
The Temple of Literature is over 1000 years old and was Vietnam's first university. Made up of 5 courtyards, the most spectacular building is the Khue Van Pavilion (pictured).
Leaving Hanoi we are fascinated by the amount of building going on. The traditional tall, thin houses are being replicated in every shape and colour as the new rich in Hanoi build as much as they can on small plots.
