From Hoi An we travel down to the beach at Mui Ne. This is a 4 hour drive north of Ho Chi Minh City and we stay in Cham Villas.
The beach is lovely although we are disappointed to find that it is developed with a solid line of large and small hotels.
It is amazing to watch the fishermen bringing their tiny coracles in through the surf. There doesn't seem to be many fish in their nets. As we head back towards HCM City we see larger fishing boats heading out to sea.
We also stop for a great roadside meal. The menu consists of DIY spring rolls, with huge quantities of herbs and leaves and delicious soups.
From HCM City we make a trip to Cu Chi to see the tunnels where the Viet Cong hid from the Americans during the war. This huge complex of tunnels has largely disappeared but there are two centres where you can see how the Viet Cong resistance was organised and even go down a tunnel. A guide (below) demonstrates how to enter one of the tiny tunnels while we try out some of the larger, tourist size tunnels ourselves.
Tommy investigates an American tank and poses with a couple of heroic Viet Cong fighters before we head back to HCM city and on to the Mekong. Click here for more.
